I am going to sound like an ignorant jerk here but I mean this with all sincerity (Hockey)?

I do agree one season and then find another way to commemorate the guy, especially if he never played a game for the team. Yes, a case like this is tragic, and no, you won't forget the guy; but at some point, you have to move on.
