Was the Boeing C-17 originally a Boeing design or a McDonald Douglas design?

I had heard from a friend that worked for Boeing in the early 70's that the Big 3 had a fly off over a replacement for the C-141 and the C-130. The Boeing design won hands down and it looked a lot like the current C-17. I was just wondering if it was.
